@richnewman I can’t argue with a single point in that Whitman article.

I know that Hugo essay — it’s in Suicides & Jazzers — and I still remember the first time I read it. A hatchet job that isn’t a hatchet job! It was so smart and careful (and it’s a perfect example of what I know I couldn’t write about either of the rejected poets, at least in my present state). It was also one of the first times I had seen someone specifically call out what I was already referring to as “dorm poetry” — that bland, diaristic, self-pitying solipsism that seemed to be so depressingly common, like dead leaves blown against hurricane fencing.
