Most of the time, I really do think being a writer is all about the feel of a pen or pencil in the hand, the grate of graphite on paper, the line left on the page (or the slam of a key bar against the platen) — and that “meaning” and “expression” generally take care of themselves. I also think that journalists start at the other end — meaning first, music later — but the best writers meet in the middle. (Like the false dichotomy in science between pure and applied research…)
